Vertex Digital Studios is a Michigan software design studio. We design the interface, the experience, and the architecture of custom applications — then build and run them. Based in Midland since 2007, we have designed and operate real production systems, including a point-of-sale platform that processes live payments every day. We work with companies across Michigan, from the Great Lakes Bay Region to Detroit, Grand Rapids, and beyond.
Software design is the discipline of deciding how an application should work and feel before — and while — it is built. It covers the architecture and data model under the hood, and the user interface and experience (UI/UX) your team and customers actually touch. Strong software design turns a messy business problem into a system that is intuitive to use, reliable to run, and practical to maintain. For a Michigan company, that is the difference between software people fight with and software that quietly makes the work faster.
We design clear, fast interfaces around how your team really works, so the software gets out of the way instead of slowing people down.
We design the data model, architecture, and integrations so your custom app is secure, scalable, and built to last.
We do not hand you a mockup and walk away. We design, build, host, and maintain the software as one accountable Michigan team.
Most software failures are design failures, not coding mistakes — the wrong thing was planned, or the experience was never thought through. Fixing that later is expensive, which is why design-first work protects your budget.
"Software design is where the money is made or lost. A clear interface and a sound architecture decided up front save you from paying ten times over to fix the wrong thing later. We design software we have to run ourselves, so we design it honestly."
— Vertex Digital Studios, founded 2007 in Midland, MI
Our proof is not a slideshow. We designed and operate a production point-of-sale platform that rings live sales and processes payments every day, a hosted phone network, a self-hosted analytics platform, and an AI voice receptionist. Designing systems we run ourselves — handling payments, calls, and sensitive records — is rare for an agency, and it is exactly why Michigan companies can trust us to design software that survives the real world.
Off-the-shelf software is designed for the average of thousands of companies. Custom software is designed for yours. Here is how the two compare for a Michigan business.
| Factor | Custom Software Design (Vertex) | Off-the-Shelf Software |
|---|---|---|
| Fit to your workflow | Designed around how you work | You adapt to its design |
| UI/UX control | Interface designed for your team | Fixed, one-size-fits-all |
| Ongoing cost | You own it, no per-seat fees | Monthly fees scale with headcount |
| Integrations | Designed for your existing stack | Limited to their API |
| Support | Local Michigan team | Ticket queue, no local contact |
We are a Mid-Michigan studio that designs and builds software for companies across the state. Whether you are in the Great Lakes Bay Region, metro Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, or the U.P., you get the same design-first team that runs its own production platforms.
Interfaces designed around real users.
Sound, scalable system design.
Designed to your exact process.
Hosted and maintained locally.
Here are four real systems our team designed, built and still supports for Mid-Michigan businesses. Clients are kept private, but the work is real. See more in our portfolio.
The need: One system to run two repair shops instead of paper tickets and separate tools for sales, billing and follow-up.
What we built: Repair tickets and customer check-in, point of sale, invoicing, subscription plans, sales dashboards, and automatic texts asking for reviews and following up on missed calls.
The outcome: Both stores work from the same live data, owners see sales at a glance, and customers hear back without staff having to remember to text them.
The need: Local businesses wanted a dependable office phone system they could manage without a big-company contract.
What we built: A cloud phone platform with desk phones, ring groups, an auto attendant, voicemail transcription, call recording, and mobile and desktop calling apps.
The outcome: Local businesses run their front-desk calls on it every day, and staff can answer the business line from a desk, a phone or a laptop.
The need: Dental offices needed their practice-management data available in the cloud without retyping it.
What we built: A sync service that connects the practice-management software to a secure cloud dashboard and drives patient reminders.
The outcome: Office teams see their schedule and patient data on a dashboard and reminders go out from the same data, with no double entry.
The need: Practice owners could not tell how many calls were missed or whether anyone called the patient back.
What we built: Call reporting that shows who called, which calls were answered or missed, and whether a callback happened.
The outcome: Owners can see missed calls clearly and follow up, so fewer new-patient calls slip through.

Yes. Vertex Digital Studios is based in Midland and designs and builds software for companies across Michigan and beyond. Being local means Michigan clients get in-person collaboration when they want it.
Software design is the planning and interface work — architecture, data model, and UI/UX. Software development is writing the code that brings the design to life. We do both in-house, so the design and the build never fall out of sync.
We scope each project around clear goals and milestones so you know the cost and timeline before we start. Smaller tools cost far less than full platforms; we right-size the design to your needs.
